The Back Story and Colors of Nick of Time

This painting has been created using a limited number of colors. Why? Why not. I recently learned that painting with restrictions can lead to seeing things differently. That certainly has been the case here.

How? I had no access to the actual colors in the still life I set up here this week. Meaning? Meaning the blooms on that crazy plant are a beautiful pinkish fuchsia. But the only red on my palette was Cadmium Scarlet. And, I had no yellow on the palette. So I couldn’t lighten the orange on the left with anything other than Cadmium Green pale or Titanium White. The other colors would not have helped with lightening the orange either. They were Ultramarine Blue, Phthalo Green, Cadmium Green.

So Much Fun

Even though my brain hurt as I tried to think about the best way to represent the colors in this set up, I had so much fun! Why? Well, for one, I have been mixing my own greens for the last two or three years. So, to have all those pre-mixed greens on my palette was an amazing treat for me. Yippee!

The Other Back Story

Lately, I have been seeing stories in what I have been painting. Whether it’s the painting of the pottery on our kitchen shelves here. Or the view here of our kitchen that gives me so much comfort.

So, this week’s painting includes a whimsical planter that my dear friend, Barb Keyworth, gave me. She died last year and I have thought about painting this planter but couldn’t. …until now. Why now? Well, first, the plant in this planter is blooming as it never has before. I knew I had to capture some of the blooms before they whither and die. Also, the teal blue results when mixing Phthalo Green with White is, hands down, one of Barb’s favorite colors. And having the Cadmium Scarlet (and compliment to Phthalo Green) in the painting, just seemed to make sense.

And, as much as I miss my dear friend, I realize it’s quite possible she “escaped” just in the “Nick of Time!” Let’s just leave that thought there, eh?

Anyway, I’m excited to share this painting for the challenges it presented and the results. It’s 12×16 inches, painted in oils on Arches Oil Paper and is currently unframed. It’s for sale for $475. Contact me here to make it your very own.
