If Not Then Why

If Not Then Why

Why, dear reader, did I name this post “If Not Then Why?” I will share more shortly. But first, let’s welcome new readers here and share the purpose of this post and blog. Okeedokee?

Small Spaces Special Places

Welcome new readers! Each year, I select a theme for my weekly paintings. This year’s is “Small Spaces Special Places.” Why? I have been surprised, even delighted, with the small spaces in our house that have captured my eye.

Also, there are the special places I see on my daily dog walks. Each morning, rain or shine, I love getting outdoors and looking for things to paint. Sometimes, we venture on the road and I share paintings of special places from these trips, too.

OK Why If Not Then Why

Here we are in the steamy, late summer heat in North Carolina. Right? Recently, I had the chance to join a friend on a butterfly walk at the JC Raulston Arboretum in Raleigh, NC. I have never been on a butterfly walk before. You? We saw so many beautiful fluttering butterflies including an “American Lady,” “Common Buckeye,” “Eastern Tiger Swallowtail,” “Eufala Skipper,” “Fiery Skipper,” “Horace Dusky Wing,” “Ocola Skipper,” “Orange Sulphur,” and a “Pipevine Swallow Tail.” Confession: it was so hot that day, I only lasted an hour or so in the hot morning sun.

As I walked from the arboretum to my car, I was so enthralled with the view of the clouds in the beautiful blue sky. So enthralled that I knew I would have to paint that sky. I’m not sure if the clouds are unusually beautiful this year or if I am just noticing them for the first time. But they offer such a delightful visual and even a cool breezy feeling to these last few weeks of steamy summertime.

And, if you’re a fan of basketball or just visiting North Carolina, you will have heard the saying “If God is not a Tarheel, then why is the sky Carolina Blue?” So, there you have it gentle reader. The summertime can be hot as h-e-doubletoothpick here. But we get to counter balance that with a healthy dose of air conditioning, ceiling fans and the most beautiful blue skies and gorgeous clouds too.

We all love those clouds! I totally understand why you wanted to paint them, Julie. The shapes of the trees and the clouds in your painting makes me feel as if I’m lying back on the grass lazily watching the sky.

The butterfly walk sounds excellent. Love all of the crazy names for them.
    Stay cool,
    Ruth

Love the attention you are giving to skies and clouds this last little while, Julie. I would think they’d be hard to capture since they are so ever-changing. But you do! The layers clouds seem to appear in are caught as well.

It’s changed the way I stare at the clouds to look at your posts and think about how to capture a cloud in a painting.

      Hiya Beth,

Thank you! I love looking at the way the clouds move and change. The challenge of capturing what I see is never ending.

I’m delighted to hear you look at clouds differently. Hope you share more sometime! Thanks as always for reading and commenting. Lots o’ love!
