Suddenly I See

Suddenly I See

You, dear reader, may wonder what “Suddenly I See” has to do with this week’s painting? Or maybe you’re thinking, heck, what a great name for a painting. Why haven’t you chosen that before? Before I elaborate, I want to welcome new readers. And, thank all of you for reading today!

Small Spaces Special Places

Welcome new readers! Each year, I select a theme for my weekly paintings. This year’s is “Small Spaces Special Places.” Why? I have been surprised, even delighted, with the small spaces in our house that have captured my eye.

Also, there are the special places I see on my daily dog walks. Each morning, rain or shine, I love getting outdoors and looking for things to paint. Sometimes, we venture on the road. In fact, we have been on the road for the past 7 weeks. Over the next few weeks, I hope to share paintings of special places from these trips, too.

What Suddenly Did I See

Well, OK, first we can probably lose the word “suddenly.” Er maybe not? I do recall a specific moment during our recent, long, long (13 hours long) drive back to NC when I heard KT Tunstall singing “Suddenly I See.” Maybe it was the long drive and late hour? Maybe it was just the right time? But I heard that song and practically started blubbering.

Then after unpacking and cleaning the camper, I looked at the gazillions of little paintings I did on the road. Many of these paintings are works in progress. I immediately assessed where I needed to refine and revise. I made notes in my journal. I just felt so darned lucky that this is what I get to do. Hence and commence the blubbering!!!

Trade-Offs

Don’t get me wrong, I know there are trade-offs to spending time alone painting and drawing. And, there are definitely times when I could use some people and face-to-face time, for sure. But, if there’s one thing this road trip helped me see, it’s that I love painting. And, even on the off days, there’s not much else I would rather be doing.

Double Meaning

Another aspect to the phrase “Suddenly I See” is that I have some clarity about time I want to spend outdoors “en plein air” as they say. And, time spent in the studio. In other words, I really enjoy doing very quick sketches, for the most part, outdoors. Then bringing those sketches back into the studio to work on them further. That’s what happened with this 3×3 inch painting entitled, what else, right, “Suddenly I See.” Yes it’s for sale for $50. Here’s the page with the Paypal link for ya if you want this for your very own. Yay!

Don’t get me wrong there were several paintings I completed on the road. They took at least 3 hours…sometimes up to 5 or 6 hours. But luckily we were in parts north where the weather was cool and breezy and the time flew by!

What Do You Suddenly See

What about you gentle reader? What do you suddenly see? I hope it’s something that helps you navigate your day with comfort and ease. But even if it’s something a bit more rugged, please do share in the comments below. Thank you!

Love the textures and colors in this, Julie! I guess it’s an oil painting? The textures and brush strokes suggest that to me and add their own element to this pretty painting.

Curious about where this one is from? Your imagination? Some place along your “Moses Trip”?

Very much looking forward to seeing others from that adventure!

      Hi Beth,

Yes! It’s an oil painting. It’s only 3×3 inches but it’s cradled on a 3/4 inch cradle. That means it’s easy for me to handle on the “Moses” (;-D) trip and it’s easy to hang on the wall without a frame.

I started it at Schodack Landing along the Hudson River. Just finished it up here back in Raleigh this week…from imagination. Yay!

Thanks for noticing the textures and colors. Working on this a bit longer helped make the textures happen!

The painting feels calm and serene, like there’s nowhere you’d rather be!
The soft atmospheric nature of the painting almost reminds me of Inness.
    I especially love the clouds.

      Hi Sachelle,

Thanks so much for noticing the feelings you describe. So wanted to communicate each as I painted. And, wow, I hope atmosphere comes through…Inness-like…gahh! I would love that too.
Clouds are my new favorite thing to paint these days. They’re so ethereal!
Wonderful to hear from you here!

I immediately (suddenly?) noticed the balance you created between the cluster of Fall colors on the lower right and the large, bulbous cloud on the upper left. The texture really struck me too as it’s the first time I’ve seen it in your work. I personally love the painterly style!

Glad you made it home safely and can reconnect with your studio space.

      Hi Kristina,

Ha – so glad you noticed the balance and texture in this painting! The texture, I find, is something that only happens with time. It’s not something that happens, for me anyway, in a quick painting. And, I actually love that outcome. And it’s wonderful for you to write that you love the painterly style. Warms my heart! Thank you my friend.

Sending warmth and gratitude for your comments back to youuuu!
