Summer Seashore Season

Summer Seashore Season

Seashore Series

Last week, I shared a painting that is the first of a series. This week, I’ll share a slightly larger painting. It’s 6×12 inches compared to last week’s which is 4×8 inches. You may be able to tell that I spent a bit more time on this painting. I kept looking at the texture of the sea grass in the dunes; they offered a fun, playful vertical line compared to the lines of the incoming waves. So here’s Summer Seashore Season.

I love that this painting shows the changing colors in the waves. Some of the more shallow waves were purple-ish. Others were greenish-purplish. It seems that depends in part upon the color of the sky, sand and the waves too.

If you want this painting for your very own, to celebrate your summer seashore season, it’s for sale for $197 + $14.28 tax + $25 shipping = $236.28. Simply PayPal.me here or contact me here if you have a different payment method you would like to use.

Seascape Inspiration Time

I am actively reading and learning about amazing women artists in history. This week I just had to share an image and brief description of a woman painter named Mary Blood Mellen. Here’s one of her paintings entitled “Gloucester 1879.”

I love the composition of this painting. Meaning? My eye moves from the cloud covered sun on the right, to the sails on the ship on the left to the boat in the foreground and then up to those delicious pinkish purplish clouds. Ooohh la la!

Mary Blood Mellen painted in the 1800s during a time when women were not typically given the independence to cultivate a painting profession. She, fortunately, was able to find a spouse who did stand up for her artistry and a painting mentor and companion, Fitz Henry Lane. He challenged her to paint. She copied Lane’s paintings as a learning tool; something artists have done throughout history.

Mellen painted the above “Gloucester” painting 14 years after Lane’s death. So, she clearly cultivated wonderful skills of her own.

Beautiful paintings in this post! I didn’t know about Mary Blood Mellen! Very cool to learn about her. Did you know that Fitz Henry Land was one of Dad’s very favorite painters? So he told me later in life when I had been to Gloucester on a visit and had taken a photo of my kids around the statue of him painting in downtown Gloucester! Very fun to know he even had a favorite painter!

Well dang Beth – I didn’t know that Lane was a favorite of dear ol dad’s. Would love to see the Lane’s statue in Gloucester and the museum there. Maybe this next trek north?

Hi Julie, I can imagine you painting this view from the deck of the Sea Vista! And yes the waves are so full of color, I could watch them for hours. Thanks for writing about Mary Blood Mellon- I’m going to check her out.
