What’s the Point

What’s the Point

What’s the point of writing What’s the Point? Oh la la I can’t wait to describe more today. But, before I do, here’s information about this blog. This is a place where, each week, I share my paintings, process, occasional infuences from art history, and inspiration. Whether this is your first or millionth visit here, hiya, hello and a warm welcome! I choose a theme to guide my paintings each year. To read about this year’s painting theme, check the description in this link here. To subscribe and get a weekly dose of color for yourself, subscribe here. Ready for what’s the point? OK! Here goes!

Last Week’s Point

In last week’s post, I remember painting and writing the blog post and feeling a strange combination of hope and remorse all packed into one. Have you ever felt that way gentle reader? Then, cue up all the problems, wars, environmental meetings sponsored by the dark side, ongoing (fill in tragic stories here) and a person can find themselves asking “What’s the Point?” Not of life but of trying to do something to fix or at least help with some of these problems.

A Glimmer of Hope

Then I got word of a teenie, tiny glimmer of hope in my world. I learned that every once in a while, good news happens. What’s the news? I learned that “The Point,” a beautiful, undeveloped area at the south end of Topsail Island is not going to be developed right now. You can read some of the back story about this place in a post I wrote earlier this fall. What does this mean? It means, that the people who entered into a contract with the current owners decided to withdraw their offer.

And, in the midst of all the fracas around this development debacle and debate, a spiffy new non-profit has been created. It’s called “Conserve the Point” and there’s a year end fund raiser going on right now. So what does Conserve the Point have to do with “What’s the Point?”

Circles of Concern

There’s this notion, you may have heard of it, called Circles of Concern. Everything on the web attributes the idea for Circles of Concern to Steven Covey. But! I always thought this idea was created by Amy’s(who I know here in Raleigh) mama. Amy’s mama told her of it when she was a teenager (wayyyy before Steven Covey I might add).

The gist is that we all have circles. You may already know each? There’s circles of concern, circles of influence and circles of control. Here’s a thoughtful article about all this. I’m going to cut to the chase here. I, we, all have the biggest chance to feel less “out of control” if we focus on what we and we alone can control.

So when I wrote the first blog post about my aspirations and dreams to conserve the point, I also knew that there were so many things going on there beyond my control. But! I have kept this issue in my “circle of influence” because I feel strongly that this beautiful piece of land is worth preserving and treasuring. Check out this wonderful video about this place if you’re interested in learning more!

Here’s the Point

Last summer, I painted a lot of paintings at the southern end of the island. They’re small, beautifully framed. And, most of them have sold. Here are two that I’m offering today. And, I will donate all the proceeds from the sale of these paintings to, you guessed it, “Conserve the Point.” Currently, there’s an anonymous donor who will match every donation, dollar for dollar through the end of the year up to $5000.

Here are the two paintings:

And check out the image below of these two delightful paintings on display in my gallery/studio here at the house. Aren’t they just wonderful?

What’s the Point 1 Painting on the left is for sale for $89 + 7.25% sales tax + free shipping = $95.45

What’s the Point 2 Painting on the right is for sale for $89 + 7.25% sales tax + free shipping = $95.45

SPECIAL OFFER: If you decide both of these paintings are for you, then they are yours for just
$150 + 7.25% sales tax + free shipping = $160.88

I will donate all the proceeds of this sale to Conserve the Point!

There’s the Point

Whew! I’m excited to share this news and these paintings with you today. That’s the point, isn’t it? Deciding what matters and, in your own way, doing something about it. How about you gentle reader? Have you been working on something in your circle of concern or influence? If so, please do share in the comments below. I would love to hear from you!

Well done Julie! I’m empowered by your passion for “ the south end”. It’s so beautiful there- and wild! I just love it and am so relieved that the offer has been withdrawn. I had not seen the video before. It’s beautiful. More power to Conserve the Point! Your donation will help….and so will your Christmas present from me! 🎅🏻
