You’re My Blue Sky

You’re My Blue Sky

One of my favorite songs includes “You’re My Blue Sky” in it! It’s by the Allman Brothers and fits with today’s painting and our front yard activity too. I’ll share more in a sec but first I want to welcome new readers to this blog. And, while I’m at it, I’ll describe the purpose of the posts and blog here.

Small Spaces Special Places

Welcome new readers! Each year, I select a theme for my weekly paintings. This year’s is “Small Spaces Special Places.” Why? I have been surprised, even delighted, with the small spaces in our house that have captured my eye.

Also, there are the special places I see on my daily dog walks. Each morning, rain or shine, I love getting outdoors and looking for things to paint. Sometimes, we venture on the road and I share paintings of special places from these trips, too.

Eat A Peach For Peace

What? Actually, “Eat A Peach For Peace” is the name of the song by the Allman Brothers. That’s a whole other story. But for today I’ll share the lyrics to this song and why it is the name of this week’s blog post and painting:

Eat A Peach For Peace

Dickey Betts wrote this about his Native American girlfriend, Sandy “Bluesky” Wabegijig.

Walk along the river, sweet lullaby, it just keeps on flowing,
It don’t worry ’bout where it’s going, no, no.
Don’t fly, mister blue bird, I’m just walking down the road,
Early morning sunshine tell me all I need to know

You’re my blue sky, you’re my sunny day.
Lord, you know it makes me high when you turn your love my way,
Turn your love
my way, yeah.

Good old sunday morning, bells are ringing everywhere.
Goin to carolina, it won’t be long and I’ll be there

You’re my blue sky, you’re my sunny day.
Lord, you know it makes me high when you turn your love my way,
Turn your love my way, yeah, yeah, yeah

Pretty sure this song came out around 1972 when I was in high school or so. It’s such a friendly, toe-tapping, upbeat song and the guitar licks from Duane Allman? Let’s just say “OMG” ;-D But my little fig painting prompted me to think of this song. Here it is.

You're My Blue Sky 5x5 inch oil painting on cradled panel by Julie Dyer Holmes

The fig is floating in the sky here. And, lately, floating and ways to paint floating objects has been on my mind. And as I painted the fig and it’s blue sky, I couldn’t help but remember the line “You’re my blue sky.” Ahhhh! Music of the high school years certainly has staying power doesn’t it? And, I just love that the lyrics mention two other favorites in my world: Bluebirds and Carolina.

Bluebird update

Speaking of bluebirds, ours are just getting ready to fledge. This also contributed to my mind thinking of blue skies. Why? The male bluebird always gently calls out to his brood to encourage them to fledge. He and the female bluebird have been feeding the four little ones like crazy these last few days. Here’s a photo from today of the male delivering some yummy soft bugs to his family:

As soon as the male bluebird flies away, a little head appears in opening! It’s so exciting to write this post with the possibility of actually seeing the four fledglings leave the box. OOPs – never mind, little fledglings are still in the box for now. Good thing actually. I can hear the juvenile hawk calling outside too. Yipes!!!

Back to the topic at hand

Let’s just say this painting of a flying fig is intended to send you good and happy vibes. As I painted the last few touches of this painting, I could hear the bluebirds calling. And, the temperature and air are both cool enough to have the windows open, too. When I think about it, there’s not much more a painter or person could ask for, don’t you think?

Yes this painting is for sale. Here’s the page with the link to Paypal in it (and a bonus painting for sale, too!)

What’s your blue sky

How about you gentle reader? What’s your version of a blue sky? I would love to hear so please share in the comments below. Thank you!

Haven’t thought about “You’re My Blue Sky” in ages! Fun to listen to it again, smiling and staring at your floating fig! I am excited about your floating objects. I think I know why: they show off your classical training AND have that whimsy that I associate with you and your creativity.
I can imagine a wall of your floating images and would gaze at them easily!

      Hiya Beth,
Isn’t that riff “You’re My Blue Sky” fab? The floating thing is becoming all consuming to me. (family joke – the C Cushing of my world – ha ha ha)
I am glad you see the whimsy in them. It feels as if I’m finding a bit of my own voice…finally.
Thanks as always for reading and commenting to me. You know it means the world to me! Love and more love!

    Julie,

I love your flying fig. It reminds me of Dali and his whimsical paintings. I haven’t seen this type of painting in your posts before. Are you heading into a new phase?

And “You’re My Blue Sky”? Brings back lots of good memories from my younger days.

So also from those days gone by, “Keep on keepin’ on” Julie! You’re living in some life affirming, magical spaces and thanks always for sharing them so generously.

    Love,

    Kristina

      Hi Kristina,

Thanks for enjoying the flying fig. I have been thinking a bit about how to communicate floating and flying things in painting. So, to the extent that that’s new, I guess this is a bit of a new phase. But I meander and am back to thinking about landscapes this week!

Yay I am so glad to hear from you here, Kristina, and am glad that you enjoy these paintings and posts. It means a lot to me!

Lots of love back to youuuu!
